I would like to say here that I do not speak from personal experience as neither of my sons were colicky. I truly feel for you mamas and hope that my advise may help you or guide you in the right direction.
The exact reason or cause for a baby to be colic is not really known and may be different for every baby.
Foods:
One thing we do know is that if a mama is nursing what she eats may cause her baby to be colic. You could try to eliminate particular foods and see if it makes a difference.
Consider cutting out: milk, onions, broccoli, cabbage, soy and chocolate.
Soothing:
You can try to help your baby by swaddling it, baby carrying in a carrier, bathing it or gently rocking it. You could try to rock it by holding it tightly while sitting on a large exercise ball. A radio or sound machine in your babies room may also help.
Others:
Simethicone: is supposed to help against bloating but no study has actually shown that it is effective in colicky babies.
Gripe Water: has been used since 1851 as a tradition to treat colicky babies but its effectiveness has not been proven.
It's main ingredients used to be alcohol, however, it has been replaced at least in the US by other ingredients. Sodium bicarbonate is the primary active ingredient today.
Probiotics: Lactobacillus reuteri is found in breastmilk and has positive effects on the gut micro flora.
Fennel: Fennel seed extract has been successful in treating babies who are colic. There is also fennel tea, but i would not recommend feeding it to the baby has any other liquid intake besides breast mil or formula changes the electrolyte balance of the baby and can be harmful. However, it can help for the mama to drink fennel tea.
You could also try rubbing some fennel oil on your babies feet.
Dicyclomine: I am only going to mention this medication because you need to know that it can harm your baby! Yes, it has shown that it can help ... BUT it can also cause your baby to DIE! So, do not give this to your baby!
One thing I would suggest is ask for help from your family, your friends, your pediatrician or your community of mamas who might be going through something similar. Sometimes it takes a village and your friends and family would probably love to help, just let them know what they can do for you!
